I’m cheating with this Pile of Shame entry.
I’ve played Spellforce 3. Multiple times. Just never all the way through.
Here’s a game I’ve gushed about repeatedly. My spiel goes something like this (bullet points for brevity):
- It’s co-op
- It’s adventure and RPG
- It’s base building
- It’s kind of tower defense…ish
- It has Doug Cockle voicing a character (you may know him as the voice of Geralt in Witcher 3)
- It’s medieval fantasy
- It has multiple expansions
- It’s dense
And no you don’t have to play Spellforce 1 and 2 to understand what’s going on.
Let’s go back to that first point. CO-OP! A rarity! If you’re like me, you grew up with co-op, whether it’s online or on the couch. It was an irreplaceable staple that makes nearly every game a little bit better. Here, from what I’ve played, it shines.
So if I’m over here in the RC blog gushing about it why and how did it hit the pile of shame?
Life, my friends. Life. Adult obligations from co-op partners are the eternal bane of a gamer growing old. So really I’m going to point the finger at everyone else and say they’re the problem. Not me.
Why haven’t I played it yet on my own? We get so few co-op games of this quality I buy it then put it on the shelf hoping to imbibe in the right social setting – aiming to impress and delight in the right moment with the right person.
In case you’re wondering, yes this is a good vintage that has aged well. And I hear doubly so for all the expansions.
Let’s give this one some love, friends. It deserves the attention.
