What is it about tactics games, real-time or otherwise, that seem to persistently enter my pile of unplayed gems.

Does that happen to you? Am I the only one here?

There’s an undeniable allure, almost trap-like in its effectiveness and pull. I wrote about that a bit in last week’s article for Shadow Tactics. “Just one more turn…” I mutter, malnutritioned and weak at 5am, 14 hours deep in a game session I can’t escape.

Don’t act like you’ve never been there.

Maybe that’s it. Maybe pure terror and fear is one half of the double-edged sword relationship I have with the genre.

Remember Total War: Rome? The main game board game-like area was turn-based and overall the entire package remains a high (highest?) watermark for the not-visited-enough pairing of videogames + Roman Empire (technically does The Forgotten City count?).

What I’m saying is this turn-based game set in the Roman Empire inspires feelings in my aged gamer heart that are no fault of its own.

Here’s the description:

Take on the role of a young Legatus whose father was murdered by an unknown political opponent, forcing you to escape Rome and take refuge in the military campaign to subdue a Greek rebellion. Step by step, you increase your military prowess, strengthen yourself in the forge of combat, and become the Legatus everyone learns to both respect, and to fear.

In Expeditions: Rome, you exert the will of Rome through your actions across the world stage, from the bright blue coasts of Greece to the deep forests of Gaul. Decide how people will view you, and Rome. Will you strike with an iron fist, or speak with a silver tongue? Will you embrace the political heritage of the Republic, or carve your own path as you navigate the complex politics of the Roman Senate? Every choice matters as you decide the fate of your legion, your close companions, and of Rome itself.

The game’s reviewed well, with people saying if you like tactics and the historical aspects then you’ll love it. Sounds like exactly what I’ve been looking for. But before I jump in, I’ll set a few reminders to get up and walk around and alarms to sound if I stay up so long I see the sunrise of next day.

Wish me luck.
