Today we’re celebrating the release of Contra Anniversary Collection.

We recommend picking it up and experiencing one of gaming’s most influential titles and a landmark confluence of 80s excess.

Gameplay-wise, the original’s a bullet hell twitchy shooter masterpiece. Add in an Aliens influence, pair players with protagonists ‘not quite Schwarzenegger’ and ‘not quite Stallone’, then empower them with a secret code for 30 lives and this is how legends are made.

You know a game is of a certain quality when it’s remembered for the cheat code it popularized as much as anything else. It wasn’t the first game to have the Konami Code, but that’s a story for another time…

Contra’s good. Really good.If you’re old with knee problems like me you remember those early days in the late 80s where you heard stories of friends of friends beating Contra, but not with the initial 3 lives. Buttons could be pressed with expert timing to yield 30 lives. I remember finally seeing it in action. Memorizing it. Then playing the game on repeat. Doors opened that were once locked.

And today you can reopen them. My fellow millennials and above, can you really afford not to take this trip down memory lane? And you younger folks, trust us this one time.

Don’t forget the “Collection” in the title either. You get 10 games here, each worthy of your time and skill, or lack thereof.

  • Contra (Arcade)
  • Super Contra
  • Contra (NA)
  • Contra (JP)
  • Super C
  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Operation C
  • Contra Hard Corps
  • Super Probotector Alien Rebels
  • Probotector

It may not be a new release worldwide, but it’s new for us here at the first platform to buy, sell, and earn digital games. Buy it here and keep it in your collection or earn some of that money back by listing it for sale when you’ve had your fill. Either way, everyone should visit one of gaming’s great cornerstones.
